The BioMelbourne Network

The BioMelbourne Network is the peak industry forum for the leaders of the Victorian biotechnology industry.

The network was established in February 2001 by the Committee for Melbourne, following a report from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) on the Victorian Biotechnology industry.  BCG found that although Victoria hosted a well developed research and development base, an important expertise gap was present threatening the maximization of ongoing international commercial opportunities.

The Committee for Melbourne and the newly formed BioMelbourne Network was successful in securing a three year establishment grant from the State Government of Victoria in late 2002.  This grant provided the critical funding to launch the BioMelbourne Network as an independent industry lead membership organisations.

On the 1st July, 2003, the BioMelbourne Network was established as an Incorporated Association and began recruiting members.

A 185 member network initiated by the Committee in 2001 and now self sufficient. It connects Victoria’s biotechnology research institutes, public and private companies, and service providers, to promote the capabilities of this dynamic local biotech industry on a global basis. Half of Australia’s biotech industry belongs to the network, whose activities not only assist individual members, but helps shape government policy.
