Welcome to the Committee for Melbourne

Higher Education Taskforce

The Committee for Melbourne’s Higher Education Taskforce has been working cooperatively to promote Melbourne as a leading university city. It’s most recent achievement is the development of a White Paper launched in August 2007. The White Paper outlines the key challenges and opportunities facing the higher education sector and provides a series of concrete recommendations involving the private sector, universities and Government.  The recommendations relate to higher education/private sector engagement, governance and funding, and policy and planning.

'With a value of $1.7b, higher education is one of Victoria’s largest exports. It is a key driver of research and development, the provider of a skilled and educated workforce and a major contributor to the city’s liveability and socio-cultural fabric.  Higher education is unarguably a key factor in Melbourne’s current and future prosperity and plays an important role in positioning Melbourne globally.  To maintain and improve its success, however, the university sector faces some very real challenges.' - from the White Paper July 2007
