Welcome to the Committee for Melbourne

Climate Change Taskforce

Melbourne is well placed to present itself as a leader in climate change knowledge, adaptation requirements and research. The Climate Change Taskforce, established in 2007, provides the forum for a cooperative approach to dealing with the local impacts of a changing climate and a framework for constructive and consensuses based outcomes for Melbourne business, government and the wider community.

The development of the detailed reports, overseen by our Taskforce Co-Chairs, Dr. Philip Moors and Mr. Tony Wood, began with commissioning written pieces from our Members of both the Opportunities and Impacts Groups.

These submissions were then integrated into the respective reports which have now been combined into one report. The Impacts report is progressing well and is currently undergoing final editing. The format for the Opportunities report was recently reshaped to ensure that it also has maximum relevance and impact on Melbourne. Initially, 12 focus areas were identified and the 12 submissions received were excellent, covering industries and areas as diverse as water, waste, biodiversity and tourism.

However the sheer number of responses meant there could not be a detailed and useful analysis of each and every one of them. In order to maximise the impact of the report, we have identified a smaller number of key actionable recommendations using a robust set of criteria which it will explore in detail. The recommendations being pursued are all areas in which it is thought Melbourne has a distinctive opportunity and capability. With so much information included in the Impacts and Opportunities reports, the Communications and Actions Working Group is working on the basis of a staged launch, instead of the usual single formal launch event. Our report will be published in July 2008.
