1.  Overseas students are a measure of the quality and attractiveness of Melbourne’s education sector and in 2004 more than 13,000 international students, the majority from China, India, Malaysia and Indonesia, studied at Melbourne's universities. 2.  Melbourne's higher educational institutions are of an extremely high quality and attract a high number of international students. The universities of Melbourne, RMIT, Monash, Deakin, LaTrobe, Victoria and Swinburne University of Technology are located within the city. (Source: www.businessmelbourne.com.au)

 

3.  Melbourne University Law School is ranked as the best law school outside North America, ahead of the University of Cambridge (34) University College London (40) and the University of Oxford (105). The University of Melbourne Law School ranked first in Australia and 29th in the world in a 2005 survey by the Social Science Research Network (SSRN). (Source: www.law.unimelb.edu.au/) The University of Melbourne is also Australia’s leading research university, accounting for almost 14% of national university research. Monash and some of Victoria’s smaller universities such as Deakin have improved their standing over the last five years. 4.  Melbourne has a higher-than-average proportion of people with university qualifications. This is higher than the national average. Between 1991 and 2001, there was an increase in the proportion of people with university qualifications in Melbourne. They made up 24% of the labour force in 2001, compared with 14.6% in 1991. The average across all Australian capital cities of the proportion of people with university qualifications was 22.0% of the labour force in 2001 compared with 14% in 1991. 5.  Victoria's secondary education is also of an extremely high quality. In addition to the VCE, 12 schools in Victoria offer the International Baccalaureate (IB).These are: Carey Baptist Grammar, Geelong Grammar School, Ivanhoe Grammar School, Kilmore International School, King Khalid Islamic College, Lauriston Girls School, Macedon Grammar, Methodist Ladies College, Presbyterian Ladies College, St Leonard’s College, Tintern Anglican Girls Grammar, Wesley College Melbourne.
